The Most “Unaccommodating” Engineering Supervisor
Zhu Zewei is an engineering supervisor at the customer service department of 3TREES. It is his unbreakable principle that work for a day must be finished within the day.
In 2007, the department head assigned him to be responsible for the engineering supervision of the exterior wall coatings work of Putian's prestige project – Wanhui International City project. After taking the job, Zhu led the team members to do a lot of work, such as reviewing drawings, site investigation, making construction plans, and timely reporting to the company's leaders, and determined the construction plan and other work within the shortest time possible. He did every work meticulously and often worked overtime.
In October 2009, the work for Wanhui's 17# to 19# buildings entered the stage of intense exterior wall construction. However, the progress of masonry and painting could not keep up with the scheduled time, and the schedule was very tight. The general contractor required the exterior wall painting to be done immediately after the masonry and painting, which meant skipping the crucial base maintenance period and would have a great impact on the quality of exterior wall painting.
Under the agreement, 3TREES would not take responsibility for such problems, but Zhu was still very anxious because if the project went amiss, it would damage the reputation of 3TREES as well as the project. What to do? The best way was to persuade the general contractor to extend the construction period. He kept approaching the general contractor and put across the clear message that base maintenance was essential and that, otherwise, there would have serious consequences. Moreover, he proactively worked with relevant personnel to implement rectification and at the same time reduce the impact on the project schedule. For a time, the general contractor was rather upset and described him as the most unaccommodating engineering supervisor.
However, Zhu would not compromise on matters where the principle is at stake. Again and again he stood firm on his stance and eventually he touched the general contractor, who deep inside actually knew well that Zhu was completely for the purpose of ensuring the quality of the project and that it was also for the good of their own reputation. Therefore, they agreed to his professional insistence on the exterior wall painting. It was not until now that the “most unaccommodating engineering supervisor” smiled with relief.
